AQA 8700 GCSE English Language - Paper 1 Question 3 Structure

AQA 8700 GCSE English Language - Paper 1 Question 3 Structure

Linking to Paper 1, Question 3 - this worksheet has 4 narrative expositions and grids for students to organise their ideas. It pushes them to make one main point about how interesting the opening is and then explain how the reader is affected, whilst using three quotes/key words or phrases to evidence it. I usually use it as a stretch and challenge exercise, in extra revision sessions or as bookends to a session. The PPT is a recent thing which allows it to be used as a more inclusive lesson. It offers a strategy to aim for 8 minutes and as much of a sophisticated answer as possible.

I have a sample pair of these in my shop for a clear preview. The texts are pretty small on the paper 2 ones but people have generally found them okay to read. I’ve added a larger version of the Hair Paper 2 Micro Mock - just in case. These Micro mocks are editable and if you want to reword/change questions then Word documents are also available - after purchase via email. Just send a request to leckyletters@gmail.com with a screenshot of your receipt.

AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language - Paper 1 Question 4 Evaluation Session

Teach your students to argue with conviction! This uses 'Fule’s Gold from the June 2018 paper and some provocative and debate-fuelling perfume Ad videos for a starter and a developed activity. There is an example part-response and annotations task which will demonstrate what is meant by an evaluative comment. The colour-coded annotations page is also in plain form for those with visual stress. The example answer is presented with the mark-scheme and is fully animated for a step-by-step annotations task - help your students get the answer right with this interactive and interesting 3hr session.

This is a full intro/revision session that could be run-through quickly or spread over a few sessions. It has 3x examples for each of the three main reading questions and an exemplar creative piece which is higher level, covering writing. These all feature on slides with notes attached for most answers with rough guidelines and examiner comments. There are animated group activities and discussion prompts which help the use of the PPT flow, click-by-click, and a hand out which includes a level 3 mark scheme for Q5. Use this incredible story to provoke some fantastic responses - there is nothing graphic here. But there is a short clip from the film which just provides some context and an interpretation of the extract - as well as a discussion prompt. Please note - this does not mention PEE or any other acronym. Please add these should you so wish. Let me know what you think!

Now with accompanying Powerpoint! Grade boosting - I hope! - a workbook like the other I’ve created. Specifically around skills and some ideas of how to boost grades. Good for most students to work independently but lower level students will need some support. It covers all the basic elements of writing for P2Q5 - Nonfiction. It has an example answer, a number of tasks to complete, format/layout of the main forms and some extra persuasive features like anecdotes and expert opinions.

This resource is a full Paper 1 resource which could have been split into 5-6 individual sessions. - covering every one of the five questions - 80+ slides - I use this for a full revision resource… Question 1 activities include one chosen to be a little tricky and has a warning with all the sound effects. Question 2 covers relationships between siblings via language in GOT. Question 3 looks at structure in the Maze Runner and looks at narrative openings. Questions 4 has a fantastic group activity where groups must consider a well-known trial and come up with a verdict and sentence. Question 5 does in with a descriptive focus using a M&S add and some other techniques and images. Exam-style questions & Academic Objectives, throughout. It has embedded video clips for use without reliance on connection. It has vast animations which contribute to activities, sound effects and song clips. As well as activities relating to each of the five questions, it also includes timers and initial preparation tasks/group work along with a secondary text-based, timed, activity to assess. There are book recommendations, RRPs and a Partridge in a Pair Tree…(not). But it is quite detailed. Run the slideshow to see the effects and how it all works. It has had a great deal of work put into to in order to make it fun and enjoyable. Texts Featured: The Magicians - Lev Grossman A Game of Thrones - George R. R. Martin Treasure Island - RLS The Maze Runner - James Dashner The Electric Michaelangelo - Sarah Hall It also makes use of the Oscar Pistorius trial for Q4. It has no graphic information or images but encourages students to use evidence to form an objective assessment and evaluation. Structure has been given some serious attention here because it was new when I made this resource. I use over about 6 hours. Please also note that this is aimed at 16+ but can easily be edited to fit a younger audience.

This session uses songs to demonstrate shifts in mood/tone and changes in focus. They’re always quite obvious so it’s a good way into the topic. It requires students to research their own set of lyrics but there’s no reason why you can’t print off some popular lyrics, randomly, and take them in with you. There are example annotations and comments and every step is led click-by-click with animation. **Special Offer! **Purchase a resource or bundle, leave a paid review and email a screenshot to me of your receipt with a request for ANY resource in my shop under £5 - FREE. Designed for a 1.5hr session in which students revisit figurative features and try to extend them but it could easily be stretched out longer. Starter is a split image with a prompt for half the group to annotate one half and vice-versa. Then share annotations and save for later student-led choice in the final summative task. There is a small, looped video of a burning fire (courtesy of pixabay.com). This helps to prompt vocabulary ideas and loops until stopped or on slide transition. Reminders of adjective/adverb use, as well as a mark scheme for upper level 3 (grade 5) through which you can explain or direct questions to students. Visually impressive and matches my Evaluation Session. Special Offer! Alert Video Embedded Within the Title Slide - Resources cover SENSITIVE ISSUES… Be sure to gain consent and warn students before use…the video will help with that! This is great for anti-bullying week and will certainly make students think and provide ample natural opportunities for discussion… This is detailed, animated set covers AQA 8700 - Paper 1 Section A - Reading and includes example responses, differences between Language & Structure, Prep’ tasks and exam-style tasks for Questions 1 - 4 from Paper 1. This is a fantastic story to use and provides a great opportunity to promote an open culture in which people are encouraged not to be afraid of asking for help or voicing their concerns or opinions. Serious issues are brought to light via interesting and thought-provoking tasks on language analysis, structural analysis and evaluation. I left Q5 because it was hard enough reading a few hundred stories about abandoned animals in the Summer 2019 paper. I couldn’t face it so there is a homework task slide to link to Q5. It could be used to introduce or revise Sec. A because it assumes some knowledge but has some detail, also. It also has timers and mark schemes and anything required for tasks in a handout.
AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 3 Structure Pack
wordsmithDFAwordsmithDFA

AQA 8700/1 GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 3 Structure Pack

9 Resources
This set of Structural Analysis sessions spans a number of lessons and goes into some depth for the latter part of AO2. There are some basics about structure and some stretch & challenge terms and examples of every kind of embedded media there is. The intertextuality lesson is one of the most enjoyable ones I’ve used as it demonstrates how it is a feature that is all around us. Imagine what your students could have said for this with the 2019 Summer paper 1 - Protagonist ‘Alice’ and all the sophisticated links to the metaphorical rabbit hole she ventures down… There is also a lesson for Halloween on AO2 but both language and structure to help with the difference. Also, check out the totally free Global Warning lesson I’ve added to my shop which would complement this pack. Grab Yourself a Bargain NOW!

AQA 8700 GCSE English Language - Paper 2- Question 1 True/False Session

This is well-animated and is sectioned off by LO slides which tick each off as they are covered. The main formative task is also put together with step-by-step highlighted quotations which follows a set of statements which are set up to imitate the exam page. After revisiting the terms ‘explicit’ & ‘implicit’ - it provides an overview of P2Q1. There are two activities at the end - one to practice independently and feedback and then a summative one to end the session. Hope you find it useful and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. =-)
