FIFA WORLD CUP 2018 is HERE!
Coming from a ‘football crazy’ class, I knew my class would want to spend the end of year engaging with content based around the FIFA world cup. This resource involves the whole class and is a way to consolidate maths through the World Cup.
I have included:
PPT for the names of 30 children
PPT for the names/groups of the countries in the World Cup
Scoreboard to track who is winning/competing against who.
Research sheet to engage children with the country they chose
Over 45 different maths questions WITH answers
Game rules
Example of a layout of who plays who
Children names will be drawn from a hat along with a country. They will then be representing this country in the game. Children will roll a dice 6 times. If either competing team rolls a 6, this equates to one goal IF they can answer the a maths question (included) correctly. If they get it incorrect, the goal has been saved by their opponent.
Aimed at KS2. Can be eaily adapted for your children too. In my class, there are only 18 students, but I have included enough for 30. (As there is 2 extra teams, the first two children ‘out’ can come back in.
An exhilarating, fun activity for those ‘End of Year’ days that we all crave activities for. We really enjoyed it :)
A ONE page worksheet on inverse operations for KS2!
I use this one sheet for each ability group within my Year 4 class. I differentiate through support rather than work. Yes the lower ability children may need more initial support and resources, but they are flying in confidence and in Maths ability. This sheet allows children to move on to a harder challenge every 3 questions, thus challenging each ability group at all times.
Before children start their activity, they need to critically think about a statement written on the paper (work backwards and change the sign). I allow them to talk in mixed ability pairs about this statement and PROVE that it is correct/incorrect before they start their activity. By doing this, children learn to justify their own answers in Mathematics, thus having an overall better understanding for the Mathematical concepts.
I have adopted this strategy for all topics and it’s proving very effective in children’s understanding. GIve it a try and be sure to let me know how it worked in your classroom.
There was a lot of interest on my Instagram (rebecca.the.irish.teacher) of a sample cover letter for teaching abroad, so I decided to make one.
A cover letter is the school’s first impression of you as a person, professional and potential employee.
Even though you may be applying for lots of jobs, ensure you make your Cover letter stands out from the crowd. Read their mission and vision, read their objectives as a school and mention these things in your cover letter and how you are going prosper and flourish in their school.
For this sample cover letter, I have clicked on to a job offer on TESjobs and read their ethos, mission and vision statements. I quote from them and make my cover letter look very individual to their school in hope to make it ‘stand out’.
There is no set length required for a cover letter but you need to refer to their ethos and mission statements if you want to make them believe you would like a job at their school.

A detailed cover letter that’s specific to a school’s ethos, while providing information of you as a teacher.
Prior to a ‘big write’, I ask the children to stick these into their books as a check list to ensure they include all of the necessary features of our chosen genre. You can add extra things on there too, such as a whole class target or focus you’ve been working on that week (e.g. similes or openers).
I use it as a slight assessment tool for myself to see how my children are progressing in writing. They complete a big write at the end of our genre which is usually every 2-3 weeks. It’s a simple tool to show progression in writing as well as make use of self and peer assessment.
Just edit this document to suit the needs of your class/genre in writing.

DIFFERENTIATED DIVISION FOR 4 GROUPS
When teaching division this week, I struggled to find a resource in which I needed. In Mathematics, I like a resource to be differentiated, while allowing the children to move up to a higher set themselves, if they find the work too easy.
This resource allows children to make great progress in one lesson as they can be challenged constantly, rather than completing page after page of the same type of calculation.
My class have not yet moved onto long division, so it is differentiated by:
Bronze: No remainders or carry ons.
Silver: Harder division calculations with some remainders.
Gold: All with remainders and involving all times tables.
Upon finishing the gold section, there is an additional section called platinum. This section allows a further challenge for children in completing ‘missing calculation’ division questions, ‘reasoning and explanation’ questions and ‘spot the mistakes’ questions (answers included). It’s based off Maths Mastery ideas.

My most recent class assembly was based on Theseus and the Minotaur (with a twist).
We had covered this story during our topic of myths https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/myths-understanding-the-features-11943412 and the children LOVED it. I wrote this play script based on the myth however we added a little twist. The minotaur is known to be a FEARSOME, UGLY creature, but in our story he turns out to be nice once people get to know him. Moral: Don’t judge a book by its cover.
The play script is editable to ensure that there is enough lines for the children in your class. I have 25 and there is 25 parts. However, it is an easy script to edit and adapt.
To tie it all together, we sang ‘Eye of the Tiger’ in the middle of the performance which went down a treat with the parents and the school.

This resource contains the script ONLY and in total the play lasted about 15 minutes.

These spellings are based off the statutory spellings of the English National Curriculum 2014. Children in years 3&4 are expected to spell these words by the end of Year 4, and in my classroom, we try to learn and familiarise ourselves with them as much as possible.
With this resource, I print, laminate and cut up these words and have them in a basket or box in the classroom. As a starter to guided reading or any English lesson really, I take out the basket and give each table 5 words to focus on. They discuss the words and the spelling patterns, along with the meaning. This way the words are familiar to them.
To increase children’s use of these words, any time they use one of them in their writing, they are encouraged to underline it to show they can spell it. Thus, the spelling of my year 4s has greatly improved, thank god!
This resource comes with 109 words in both yellow and black and white.

When teaching multiplication this week, I struggled to find a resource in which I needed. In Mathematics, I like a resource to be differentiated, while allowing the children to move up to a higher set themselves, if they find the work too easy.
This resource allows children to make great progress in one lesson as they can be challenged constantly, rather than completing page after page of the same type of calculation.
My class have not yet moved onto 2 digit multiplication, so it is differentiated by:
Bronze: TO x O (focusing mainly on the 2, 3, 4 and 5 times tables)
Silver: HTO x O (using a range including the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables)
Gold: THHTO x O (using a range including the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables)
Upon finishing the gold section, there is an additional section called platinum. This section allows a further challenge for children in completing missing calculation multiplication questions (answers included).
I have provided the success criteria at the top of the page, as I like to remind children constantly what they need to remember to do.

I’ve added these key terms (in yellow) here for you to create a working wall for your English display. These headings can be kept up all year round, even when you change genre. All you need to do is to change the work around it, accordingly.

Resources, plan, presentation and SPAG. This week of lessons really helped bring on the children's descriptive writing. The video clips help them to imagine things clearer and bring great life to their writing. I found it really successful. It focuses on getting the children to use their sense to imagine what a scene looks like.
SPAG lesson is on prepositions and this presentation was accumulated from TES website also.

My class assembly that I did today as we have been studying fairy tales for the last 2 weeks.
Cinderella can seem a bit babyish for Year 4 students, however we made it a funny version and the audience were in tears laughing. This script is funny, modern and is easily adaptable. I made one of the stepsisters a boy (wears the wig etc) and the audience loved it. My prince was also a girl and she as fantastic, put on the deep voice and all.

Both the children and the parents adored the assembly. A personal highlight of mine is that the children sing working 9-5 by Dolly Parton- amazing.
In this topic, children will need to know two different models of the solar system: The geocentric model and the heliocentric model.

This is a weeks worth of planning, resources and presentations based on imaginary settings. Children will be creating their own imaginary world in which they will need to know inside out to write about. To make it more interesting, children will need to pretend that they are Horrid Henry entering their own imaginary land.
I taught these lessons this week and they worked very well. Children loved creating their own worlds in which they could bring Horrid Henry into it. There is planning stages to these lessons also which allow children time to edit their worlds for the ‘big write’ at the end of the week.

The Heliocentric Model- this lesson teaches children about another model of the Solar System in which was believed by another Ancient Scientist.
This lesson requires children to make a jigsaw of the model and figure out which planets have been included/left out. There is also an aspect of role play, for children to act as the planets rotating around the sun.

*A jigsaw activity where children re-make the heliocentric model.
