A Christmas Carol: Allegory!
This engaging and informative lesson enables students to make insightful and developed interpretations of Dickens’ use of allegory throughout ‘A Christmas Carol.’ In particular, they explore how Dickens utilises various characters and events to reveal hidden meanings about selfishness, greed, and hidden ugliness in Victorian society.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
- Defining the key term ‘allegory’ and establishing the key message of Dickens’ allegory;
- Reading and understanding the selected extracts to determine how Dickens’ characters are allegorical;
- Demonstrating an understanding of the allegorical meanings of individual events and scenes in the novel, through a fun interactive game!
- Analysing the extent to which the allegory is effective in presenting Dickens hidden message;
- Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts.
Included is:

Alex Neptune Dragon Thief - Whole Class Reading Session!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills through a reading of the opening section of David Owen’s ‘Alex Neptune: Dragon Thief.’
The resource pack includes the extract needed. Reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. A vocabulary check helps to secure children’s understanding of any new or unfamiliar language.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities.
The session is best suited for children in years 5-6, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.
Matilda - Whole Class Reading Session!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension of the opening chapter of Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda.’
It contains a link to the online chapter (on the first slide - also provided as PDF). This is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language.

Macbeth: Act 3 Scene 4 - The Ghost (Banquet) Scene!
This lesson aims to improve students’ understanding of one of the key scenes in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth – Act III Scene IV. In particular, they learn to make insightful interpretations about the changing nature of Macbeth’s tone throughout the scene, and are enabled to understand how this would have affected Shakespearean audiences.
The lesson utilises a range of tasks, that require students to be visual and interactive learners. It follows this learning journey:
- Defining the key term ‘tone’ and establishing its importance as a literary technique;
- Understanding how tone is used to depict mood and attitude across a range of fiction;
- Reading and interpreting Act 3 Scene 4, and establishing how Macbeth’s tone alters throughout;
