Example persuasive advertisement based on Chapter 9 of the children’s novel Stig of the Dump by Clive King. This exemplar advert persuading readers to visit Stone Henge is perfect to use as a WAGOLL when studying Chapter 9 of Stig of the Dump. The model advert text comes with a feature identification worksheet, plus an answer sheet that can be uploaded for remote learning or shared in class, enabling pupils to become confident in the genre before an independent or shared writing activity. After identifying features, pupils plan and write their own persuasive advert based on the exemplar. The 3 differentiated example texts contain conversations between the boy and his family when he arrives home after his adventure. Deepen your pupils’ understanding of the text and get them practising their writing with this The Iron Man themed resource. Pupils read two example texts based on the children’s science fiction novel The Iron Man (also known as The Iron Giant) by Ted Hughes. One text is written from the point of view of Hogarth and the other from the perspective of Hogarth’s mother. After reading relevant section of Chapter 2 (extract included), pupils examine the features of Hogarth’s first person account (answer key included) and then continue either of the example texts or write their own from the point of view of a different character, such as Hogarth’s father, either of the farmers or even the Iron Man himself! Two activities and a quiz involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated contractions. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the apostrophes for omission have been put in the correct place for a variety of contracted words. There are three activities provided: ✽ Contractions Quiz: pupils identify whether each sentence is correctly or incorrectly punctuated. This quiz is great to use as a starter or plenary with the whole class with pupils working independently or in pairs. Each sentence contains one or more contractions, or words that are often confused with contractions, that have been correctly or incorrectly punctuated. Each answer is revealed and explained on the next slide. ✽ Contractions Card Sort: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Both large and small versions are provided, plus an answer sheet. ✽ Contractions Worksheet: pupils select the correct use of omission apostrophes and spelling of the contractions used in sentences. They also add missing contractions to sentences. Great as an independent assessment task. ✽ Contraction Word Bank: can be used by SEN or lower ability pupils to support them while carrying out these activities. This word bank is also a useful reference sheet for independent writing activities. As well as common contraction use, these resources also look at the following errors in contraction use: • Confusing it’s with its • Confusing who’s with whose • Confusing they’re with there or their • Confusing plural nouns with contractions ending with ’s Answers to all tasks are included. A punctuation mark matching activity with three levels of differentiation. Pupils match each card showing a punctuation mark symbol with an explanation of its use and an example sentence or sentences. An answer sheet is included. This activity helps pupils to remember the names of punctuation marks and how they are used. It can be used when introducing new punctuation marks to a class in lower key stage two or as a revision activity for upper key stage two (or even KS3). This activity is ideal as a starter or plenary for an English/literacy lesson or punctuation lesson. The cards have been differentiated three ways: • Lower ability: example sentences display the featured punctuation in red • Middle ability: featured punctuation is missing with its position indicated by a red rectangle • Higher ability: featured punctuation is missing An ideal activity for pupils to carry out in pairs or small groups. Two activities involving identifying correct and incorrect use of semi-colons. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the semi-colons have been put in the correct place for a variety of sentences. There are two activities provided: ✽ Semi-Colon Cards/Quiz: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz. ✽ Semi-Colon Worksheet: pupils identify whether the semi-colons are correctly punctuating the sentences, and then make any necessary corrections; identify different types of semi-colon usage; add missing semi-colons to sentences and write sentences using semi-colons. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz. Different ways of using semi-colons are demonstrated, including: • Using a semi-colon to separate items in a complex list • Using a semi-colon to separate related main clauses • Using a semi-colon with a conjunctive adverb Answers to all tasks are included. Example texts demonstrating dialogue writing with direct speech based on the book The Boy Who Drew Dragons by Andy Shepherd. The 3 differentiated model texts contain conversations between Tomas, Liam and Miss Logan on Tomas’s first day at school after Flicker arrives (based on events in Chapter 10). Differentiated feature find worksheets with answers are included for easy marking and instant feedback. All resources are differentiated three ways.
