Two activities involving identifying correct and incorrect use of semi-colons. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the semi-colons have been put in the correct place for a variety of sentences. There are two activities provided: ✽ Semi-Colon Cards/Quiz: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz. ✽ Semi-Colon Worksheet: pupils identify whether the semi-colons are correctly punctuating the sentences, and then make any necessary corrections; identify different types of semi-colon usage; add missing semi-colons to sentences and write sentences using semi-colons. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz. Different ways of using semi-colons are demonstrated, including: • Using a semi-colon to separate items in a complex list • Using a semi-colon to separate related main clauses • Using a semi-colon with a conjunctive adverb Answers to all tasks are included. Two activities involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated direct speech. Pupils must look carefully at the direct speech to check if the correct punctuation has been used and if it is all in the correct place. There are two activities provided: • Direct Speech Punctuation Cards: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz. • Direct Speech Punctuation Worksheet: pupils identify whether the speech has been correctly or incorrectly punctuated and then make any necessary corrections. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz. The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks). Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including: • The reporting clause before the direct speech • The reporting clause after the direct speech • Two or more sentences of direct speech together • The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech • The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’. Pupils start by reading the action writing extract from the children’s book The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith. The structure is then examined using the boxing up method. A new text is planned by modelling the innovation (completed grid provided). Pupils match the character traits of Hogarth from The Iron Man (also known as The Iron Giant) by Ted Hughes with evidence from the text and a definition of that character trait. The quotes from the text have been provided, alongside the definitions. This resource has been differentiated three ways: • Higher ability: 9 quotes, character traits and definitions have been provided. • Middle ability: 6 quotes, character traits and definitions have been provided. • Lower ability: 6 quotes have been provided, with the character traits and definitions combined. This activity is a great way for pupils to think carefully about how a character’s personality is revealed by what they do and how they react in a story. This gives pupils an opportunity to use their inference skills. All quotes are taken from Chapter 2 of the text. An answer sheet has been included. After the matching activity, pupils plan and write a character profile using the writing template provided. This example Iron Man character profile can be used as a handy WAGOLL or model text.
