I am a secondary school & A-level Science teacher, specialising in Biology. I am also an experienced AQA GCSE Biology Examiner. My resources contain a mix of Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons aimed at meeting specification points for the new AQA Trilogy GCSE course and KS3 Activate course. This lesson is designed for the KS3 Year 8 Science course, specifically the P2 1.1 unit on ‘Electricity & Magnetism’. This lesson begins with an introduction to current & charge, students are provided with the definition for current and told that an ammeter is the component used to measure current, in amps. Students will then watch a short video on current, during which they will need to answer a couple of questions. Students can mark their work once this is complete. Students are then told the role of the battery in the circuit, as the store of energy which provides the push which gets the current flowing, pushing the charge around the circuit. Next, students are introduced to electrical circuit diagrams, they are firstly shown a simple circuit diagram and are asked to label the components indicated from a list of key words: switch, battery and bulb. After students have drawn the circuit and had a go at labelling it, the answers can be revealed so they can mark and assess their work. Students are now given a set of instructions to draw 4 different circuit diagrams, the answers to this task are included in the PowerPoint so students can self-assess their work using the mark scheme provided. Lastly, students will complete a task which requires them to match sentences starters to the correct sentence enders, to assess their knowledge of what they have learned this lessons. This task can then be either self-assessed or peer-assessed using the mark scheme provided. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the ‘Organic Chemistry’ SoW. Firstly, students asked to think about a question that oil companies face - what to do with longer chain hydrocarbons which are in less demand than smaller chain hydrcarbons? Pupils can share their ideas in pairs, then as a class, before being introduced to the process of cracking. Next, as a recap of the structure of alkanes pupils will need to use ‘Molymod’ kits to make the first four alkanes in the homologous series, they will also need to complete a table to identify the structural & displayed formulae for each. This work can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. Now pupils are introduced to the process and products of cracking, students will then be given a set of hydrocarbons which are being ‘cracked’ with one of the products identified, they will need to identify the other product and also determine if it would be an alkane or an alkene. Once complete, this work can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The next part of the lesson focuses on the structure and properties of alkenes, students will firstly be given a set of facts about alkenes which they can take notes from. Next, students will watch a video about alkenes, they will be provided with a set of questions that they need to answer using this video. This work can be self-assessed using the answers provided. Using what they have learned in this video, the teacher will conduct a demonstration which tests four unknown substances with bromine water - pupils will need to record their results in a table and determine whether the unknown substances are alkenes or alkanes. Pupils will lastly complete a ‘Quick Check’ task, this is a set of questions which will summarise what pupils have learned during the lesson. They will be able to peer or self-assess their work using the answers provided. The plenary task is for pupils to sum up what they have learned this lesson in three sentences, using the list of key words provided. All resources are included at the end of the presentation. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Chemistry GCSE, particularly the ‘Organic Chemistry’ SoW. The lesson begins on a description of hydrocarbons and why crude oil is so useful, this is followed by a video on crude oil. Whilst watching the video students will be required to answer a set of questions, this work can then be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided. The next part of the lesson requires students to watch a teacher demonstration of the distillation of crude oil, students will watch the teacher distill crude oil, removing at least four fractions. The fractions can be passed around the classroom and students will need to complete a results table to assess the smell, viscosity, colour and flammability of each fraction. Pupils will now focus on the structure of different alkanes, they will be introduced to the first four alkanes and be asked to think about why there is a pattern in the formulae of alkanes. Next, students will complete a summary table of the structural formulae, displayed formulae, 3D structure and boiling point of the first four alkanes in the homologous series. Students can self/peer assess their work using the answers provided. Finally, pupils will complete a ‘Quick Check’ task, which involves answering a set of questions about what they have learned this lesson. Those higher ability students may want to turn to the back of their books to avoid looking at notes, lower ability will need extra support. Again, the mark scheme for these questions is included in the PowerPoint. The plenary task requires pupils to write 3 facts, 3 key words and one questions to test their peers knowledge of what they have studied in class today. This is a resource aimed at the NEW GCSE Physics specification on ‘Energy’. Other lessons from this series can be found in my TES Shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience The lesson begins by considering objects with elastic potential energy stores. The calculation for the elastic potential energy store of an object is introduced and pupils can have a go at rearranging it themselves. **If lower ability - you can go through this on the board** Pupils then copy and complete the table which leads them through the different stages to this calculation, they can then self-assess their work using a red pen. The next two slides are questions pupils can complete to work out the elastic potential energy stores of various objects, these questions can be self-assessed. The final activity is a past-paper question task (worksheet provided at the end of the PowerPoint) whereby pupils complete the questions, pass to their peers and peers will mark the work using the mark scheme provided on the PowerPoint. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA AS-level Biology course, particularly the ‘Cells’ module. In the majority of my A-level lessons the beginning portion of the lesson is mainly teacher-led, where students are expected to take notes onto a handout/in their books. This is then mixed in with student-led activities, as well as questions and exam prep. You will find some of my slides have blank spaces for you to add more detail/descriptions/explanations. If you look at the ‘Notes’ section underneath each of these slides, you will find additional content which you can add in as you teach! This lesson begins with a review of total magnification and cell fractionation before defining the two main advantages of the electron microscope. The following slides offer detailed notes on the parts of the electron microscope and their functions. Students will then fill in a table in their books using information notes which have been posted around the room. A self-assessment slide follows! Students are then introduced to SEM and TEM and encouraged to compare the two before practising through a mini-whiteboard activity! To consolidate the lesson, students will complete an exam-style question and self-assess to the following slide. The plenary task is a series of answers for students to write the questions for. This lesson is designed for the Activate KS3 Science Course, specifically Year 7 P2 ’Sound’. The lesson starts with a definition of an ‘echo’ and how echoes can be produced by ship via sonar and by baby scanners via ultrasound. Students will then consider the ways in which echoes can be reduced and why this might be important in places such as theaters, concert walls & recording studios. The first activity involves students using a range of materials (tissue paper, cardboard, cotton wool, bubble wrap, paper, plastic) to soundproof a margarine tub, which will hold a buzzer and a decibel meter. Each group can test how well they have soundproofed their margarine tub, perhaps a prize for the best one! Once this has been complete students can write an evaluation for their practical, they will need to consider which part of their practical were carried out well , how the findings could be improved and what they would do differently if it was done again. Next, students will be given a piece of information on ‘Ultrasound’ - using this they will need to answer a set of questions in their books. This task can be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided in the books. The last task is a crossword on ‘Sound’, students should use knowledge of that they have learned over the course of the topic on sound to answer the clues and complete the crossword. The task can be assessed using the mark scheme provided. The plenary requires students to complete one of the selection of sentence starters to summarise what they have learned so far this lesson. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Chemistry GCSE, particularly the 'Atomic Structure & Periodic Table' SoW. Next, pupils will be introduced to compound naming rules based upon the elements within that compound, pupils will then use these rules to complete a worksheet. Once finished the worksheet can be self-assessed using the answers provided. The next part of the lesson focuses on equations, pupils are firstly introduced to the idea of reactants and products of a chemical reaction. Given a worked example students look at how to write a word equation, once they have practise this they can complete their own word equations. This work can be self-assessed using the answers provided in the PowerPoint presentation. The final activity is an exam-style question, pupils should complete this on their own in silence and be given 7 minutes as it is 7 marks. Once finished they can self or peer-assess their work. The plenary activity is for students to write a twitter message about what they have learnt that lesson. The plenary task is a set of questions about what students have learnt that lesson. This lesson is designed for the KS3 Year 8 Science course, specifically the P2 1.1 unit on ‘Electricity & Magnetism’. This lesson begins with an introduction to potential difference, students will watch a couple of minutes of a video and whilst watching will need to answer a set of questions. This task can then be self-assessed using the mark scheme provided on the PowerPoint presentation. Next, students will be shown a circuit diagram, with two voltmeters connected - one parallel to a cell and one parallel to a light bulb. Students are asked to ‘Think > Pair > Share’ their ideas about whether the potential difference is higher across the battery or across the cell. Students will then carry out an investigation to find the answer the this question. After this, students will complete a fill-in-the-blank task to summarise what they have learned so far this lesson. Once complete student can self-assess or peer-assess their work using the mark scheme provided. Lastly, students will be given a set of questions relating to potential difference and also resistance, students will need to use what they have learned this lesson as well last lesson on resistance to complete these questions. This task can then be marked and assessed using the mark scheme provided. This is followed by a very quick anagram challenge, students will need to unscramble the anagrams to spell 6 key words related to the topic of electricity, students can write a definition for each key word if they have finished. The plenary requires students to write a twitter message, summarising what they have learned this lesson, including #keywords. This is a lesson designed to meet specification points for the new OCR GCSE (Gateway) Biology 'Scaling up’ scheme of work. This lesson begins by identifying the purpose of mitosis - growth and repair. Pupils will then be given a double-sided worksheet, the first side corresponds to the first 5 mins 51 seconds of the video included in the PowerPoint slide. Pupils will need to watch the video and answer the questions on the sheet, they are in order but for lower ability classes you may want to stop the video and guide pupils through the work. Self-assess this work using the answers provided in the PowerPoint before moving on with the video. The next part of the video guides pupils through what happens during Mitosis - Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase. Pupils have diagrams of the the processes on the back of their worksheet, they will need to use the video to name the stages and describe what is happening. Self-assess work using the answers that are provided in the PowerPoint. The next activity, pupils are given real images of a cell going through mitosis and descriptions of the stages, they need to cut and stick the stages and the pictures in the correct order to complete a flow diagram. Pupils peer or self-assess their work using red/green pens. This resources is designed for the OCR Biology GCSE, particularly the ‘B3 - Organism-Level Systems’ scheme of work. This lesson begins by pupils being provided with the aim of the investigation plus an equipment list, pupils will need to use this to decide what the independent, dependent and control variables of the practical may be. The next slide runs through some of the important details of the practical, using this pupils will then need to write a step-by-step method summarising how they are planning to conduct their investigation, they can work in groups to plan this but must complete their own worksheet. Next, pupil will conduct the experiment to measure the effect of a distraction on student volunteers reaction time. Results should be collected using the worksheet provided, once they have collected their raw data they can use this (as well as the calculation provided) to work out the reaction time for each volunteer in each trial, and a mean can be calculated. Once the second table of results on the calculated reaction times have been filled in pupils can complete their graph of results, this can then be used to write a conclusion using prompt questions provided on the plenary slide of the PowerPoint presentation. This resources is designed for the OCR Biology GCSE, particularly the ‘B3 - Organism-Level Systems’ scheme of work. The lesson begins with a recap on the difference between a stimulus and a receptor and asks students to think>pair>share what the function of photoreceptors might be and where they are found. Pupils are then shown a diagram of an eye, pupils are asked to consider (from a list of structures provided) which labels might go where, they can discuss in pairs and annotate their own diagram if they know for sure. Pupils can then assess their own work when the answers are revealed on the next slide. Pupils must now learn the functions of each of these structures, they will each be given a slip of information about the function of one part of the eye and they should walk around the room and share their information to complete the table in their books. This task can be self-assessed using the answers provided. The next part of the lesson focuses on the pupil reflex, firstly a practical is undertaken whereby pupils block out light from the room and then observe what happens to their partners pupils when they bring a torch to the side of their partners eye. This leads into a description of the pupils reflex, including the role of the circular and radial muscles. Pupils will need to summarise this information by copying and completing the sentences into their book, which can be self-assessed once completed. The last activity is looking at how light is focused on the retina by the lens, pupils are shown a diagram of how this works. After being given a verbal description they are asked to firstly copy the diagram complete with labels and explain how light is focused on the retina using a list of key words that are provided. The plenary task is an exam question on what the students have learnt this lesson, pupils should complete this in silence in their books and then red-pen their work using the mark scheme provided once they have finished. This resources is designed for the OCR Biology GCSE, particularly the ‘B3 - Organism-Level Systems’ scheme of work. This lesson begins by looking an organism - a cat- and asking pupils to think about the types of stimulus the cat might respond to in it’s environment, plus which organs it needs to sense these stimuli. Pupils will brainstorm their ideas and then self-assess their work once the answers are revealed, additionally they will answer an exam question on this topic. Next, pupils focus on the effectors and their role in the nervous system. Pupils will be provided with a description of the role of muscles and glands as effectors and will then need to complete an exam question to assess their knowledge, mark scheme provided for either peer or self-assessment. The next part of the lesson will focus on neurons, firstly a diagram of a neuron cell is shown and pupils need to think about how this cell is similar and different to a normal animal cell. Pupils may discuss this in pairs and try and come up with an answer before the mark scheme is revealed. Sensory and motor neurons are now introduced via an animation, pupils can look at the pathway the electrical impulse travels as it moved around the nervous system. Pupils will use this to then copy and complete a summary to describe this process, when completed this can be self-assessed. The final activity is for pupils to copy and complete a table to sum up the main functions of each part the human nervous system either by using a card sort or by putting the statements on the board. This can then be peer or self-assessed when complete The plenary activity is for pupils to summarise the 5 main key words they have learnt that lesson. This is a lesson designed to meet specification points for the new OCR GCSE (Gateway) Biology ‘Scaling up’ scheme of work. The lesson begins by introducing the heart as an organ and it’s function in the body, pupils will have a few minutes to read through the information on the slide as a ‘memory test’. Then move the slide forward where pupils have to copy and complete the information about the heart, using key words to help them. Pupils can then self-assess their work. For the next activity pupils are given an information sheet providing information about the structure of the heart and the job of the blood vessels supplying/taking blood away from the hear. Pupils will also be given a worksheet which they will need to complete using this information. Pupils will then be introduced to the idea of valves, they can watch a short video an have a look at the position of the valves within the heart. They will need to Think > Pair > Share ideas about the function of the valves in the heart. After a short class discussion the answer can be provided for them. The next activity will require pupils to sort information into a flow diagram to demonstrate the route the blood flows through from the right atrium onwards. The words they need to fill in the boxes will be provided, they can self-assess their work once it has been completed. Next, pupils will be given a place mat worksheet which has questions about each of the four components of the blood. Each student will then be given a slip of information about these four components, the students will need to share information to complete their place mat. Once complete, the answers which will be provided on the PowerPoint slide can be used for pupils to either self-assess or peer-assess their work. Pupils will now look at how red blood cells transport of oxygen around the body, once this has been explained using diagrams on the PowerPoint slide pupils will then need to arrange sentences into an order to show how this process occurs. Once completed pupils will self-assess their work using the answers provided. The next activity is a True or False activity about what the students have learnt so far, this could be extended by asking students to re-writing the incorrect sentences so that they make sense. The final activity is a past-paper question on the components of blood, which pupils can then peer or self-assess.
