There have been concerted efforts in Scotland in the past couple of years to prove that not only is maths essential but it can also be fun.

With most Scottish schools now on holiday - and the rest about to join them - the idea of a family maths challenge might seem like a hard sell. But if you’d like to prove your mathematical mettle (and risk being humiliated by your children) the latest in an occasional series of maths challenges is out, this time tapping into the excitement around the Women’s World Cup from a Scottish point of view.

The Deputy First Minister’s Summer Maths Challenge runs until 27 July, when the answers will be published online. Previous maths challenges can also be found online.
