Five of Cardiff’s 20 secondaries and all five of its nursery schools have been scheduled for closure, in proposals aimed at removing thousands of surplus places.
Altogether, around 27 of the city’s schools will be affected by closures and amalgamations over the next 10 to 15 years. But the city council has pledged that proceeds from the sale of surplus sites will be reinvested in other schools, as part of a pound;300 million investment package aimed at improving facilities and buildings.
As TES Cymru went to press, the city council was due to release details of the proposals to the media, having already alerted heads to changes affecting them. The council agreed last year to come up with a strategic plan to improve provision across the city.
In January 2004, surplus places stood at nearly 6,466 (20 per cent) in the primary sector, and 1,761 (7 per cent) in secondary - but are not evenly distributed across the city.
Llanedyrn, St Illtyd’s RC, and Cantonian high schools all face closure, while Llanrumney and Rumney highs are to close with a new school being built on the Llanrumney site.
