International schools group Nord Anglia Education has announced the appointment of Nikki Holmes as its group head of safeguarding, overseeing more than 80 schools worldwide.
The group has also announced that Sir Peter Wanless, who was chief executive of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children from 2013 to 2024 in the UK, has become its independent safeguarding adviser.
Ms Holmes joins from Save the Children Australia, where she was global head of safeguarding.
She led the charity’s safeguarding teams and implemented child-protection initiatives and frameworks across multiple area, including Australia, the Pacific Islands, Europe, Africa and South East Asia. She has also served as a government adviser in Australia, helping to shape national policy.
Ms Holmes will direct Nord Anglia’s safeguarding strategy, working closely with regional and school safeguarding teams to maintain and enhance best practice, the group said.
Strengthening safeguarding culture
Meanwhile, Sir Peter will advise on Nord Anglia’s safeguarding strategy across its global network of schools. He was knighted in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to children, young people and the charitable sector.
As an independent safeguarding adviser, Sir Peter’s consulting role will involve him reporting to Nord Anglia’s education advisory board, chaired by Lord David Puttnam. Ms Holmes reports to Elise Ecoff, chief education officer at Nord Anglia.
Commenting on the appointments, Dr Ecoff said: “Peter’s and Nikki’s considerable experience at the forefront of child protection will further strengthen our safeguarding culture.
“Their leadership expertise will continue to enhance our policies and practices, placing our students’ wellbeing at the centre of our educational offer.”
