Tes has been around for 122 years and in all that time there have been few stranger stories we’ve covered than that of Brandon Lee.

In 1995 it emerged that Lee, a teenager who had just left a school on the outskirts of Glasgow after a year there, had actually been a man in his thirties.

Now, the whole bizarre episode is hitting the big screen: My Old School is released in the UK today, combining interviews with staff and students who were at school with the pupil they knew as Brandon Lee, as well as performances from Alan Cumming (pictured above), Lulu and Clare Grogan - the latter’s involvement a callback to another film set in a Scottish secondary school, Gregory’s Girl.

We’re delighted that, for a bonus episode of Tes Scotland‘s Film Schools podcast, we got the chance to interview director Jono McLeod - who was also a pupil alongside Brandon Lee.

He talks about what it was like when the truth started to emerge, how making the film changed his perspective on the events that unfolded, and its connections with classic high school movies of the past.
