What Freedom Writers gets right and wrong about teaching

In a special podcast series for the summer, Film schools: what we learn when cinema goes to school, we look at some of the movies’ most memorable depictions of teachers.

In Episode 4, out today, teacher Gillian Freeland talks about the classic 2007 drama Freedom Writers. Based on actual events, it stars Hilary Swank as an idealistic young teacher.

The podcast series was inspired by a tweet last year when Tes Scotland news editor Henry Hepburn asked followers for their favourite film featuring a teacher as a central character Freedom Writers was one of the most popular responses.

Previous episodes have looked at Gregory’s Girl, Être et Avoir and the Harry Potter films.

Look out for more episodes soon.
