The Institute for Apprenticeships will formally adopt responsibility for T levels on Thursday.
Chief executive Sir Gerry Berragan told Tes the IfA will be given statutory powers from the Department for Education related to the flagship new technical qualifications, due to be introduced next year.
These will “enable us to approve content, procure and contract-manage awarding bodies”. The organisation’s name will also change to the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, as set out in the Technical and Further Education Act 2017.
Statutory powers for T levels
“Up until now we have been very actively involved in wave 1 [of T levels], but we have been doing so in an advisory capacity," Sir Gerry said. "Officially we take that role on with statutory powers from Thursday.”
The awarding bodies that will deliver the first wave of T levels are set to be announced next month.
