I applaud Tim Whitney’s championing of a second division football team (“Former teacher coached miracles out of Crewe”,TES, March 1) However I question his assumption that Benfica, AC Milan or Barcelona will form the opposition in a future European Cup Final.
I would like to draw his attention to another side in the North-west who are embryonic giants destined for great things. Last season, coached by former teacher Mick Wadsworth, they rose as champions from the third division and made a first visit to Wembley in the final of the Auto Windscreen Shield (incidentally beating Crewe on the way).
No, Mr Whitney, come the millennium, the football fixture list will throw up nothing more exciting than the clash between Crewe Alexandria and Carlisle United.
