Penelope Leach, the child psychologist and childcare expert, has become president of the National Childminding Association, which has launched a campaign to promote registered childminding. Her classic book, ‘Your Baby and Child’, has just won the British Medical Association’s award for the best medical book for a general audience.
Anne Jarvis is the new education chair of the Association of London Government, which represents all 33 councils in the capital. Mrs Jarvis is a former primary teacher who has chaired the eduction committee of the London borough of Barnet for five years.
Prince Michael of Kent has become the royal patron of the Institute of Linguists. He is himself an accomplished linguist trained by the Ministry of Defence in Russian and other languages. The institute, founded in 1910, is the UK’s largest organisation for translators, interpreters and language teachers. It is also an exam awarding body.
Kim Ryley, director of education for Rhondda Cynon Taff since its creation in 1995, has been appointed chief executive of the council. He has been acting chief executive since January. Mr Ryley was last year’s chairman of the Welsh Society of Education Officers.
Stockport has appointed headteachers for two new schools for pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Anne Copley is to take charge of a new primary school in Heald Green (as well as managing the borough’s primary behaviour support service) and Susan Woodgate will lead a new 11-16 secondary school in Hawk Green. Both schools, as yet unnamed, will open in September.
The three final members have been appointed to the board of UFI Ltd which, under chairman Lord Dearing, is developing the University for Industry. They are Ann Limb, principal and chief executive of Cambridge Regional College, Aideen McGinley, chief executive of Fermanagh District Council, and Tahir Mohsan, managing director of Granville Technology Ltd.
