A comprehensive A3 revision sheet for ‘A Christmas Carol’ with differentiated tasks.
It includes key quotations from each stave and various ways of making links to context for A03.
The differentiated tasks encourage students to
Bronze: Find language features in the quotations
Silver: Match the quotations and context to themes
Gold: Work out the 10 quotations which can be adapted to suit the most themes.
Also includes a planning resource offering 3 levels of differentiation to help guide students on how to structure a full length response on the following 4 themes/topics: children, materialism, ghosts, Christmas.
Tier 1 difficulty (I do): Big idea, topic sentences and quotations are provided. Students add the analysis of the quotations.
Tier 2 difficulty (We do): Students must choose 2 quotations to support each topic sentence and analyse the quotations.
Tier 3 difficulty (You do): Students have to generate the big idea, the topic sentences, 2 quotations a paragraph and the quotation analysis.
In my experience, students find beginning comparative paragraphs to be the hardest aspect of writing comparisons on the power and conflict anthology poems.
These two worksheets offer help with starting off discriminating comparisons.
Students use the prompts to complete the opening sentences to various comparative paragraphs.
A fully differentiated and potentially outstanding lesson offering various levels of differentiation. It invites students to explore 5 ways Scrooge is presented in Stave 1: outsider, uncharitable, miser, isolated and lacking festive spirit.

Main: Students work in 5 groups. They each complete their paragraph based on their individual question. After this students carousel to share the answers.
Plenary: Students understand the AQA mark scheme and grade their work against the English Literature criteria.
Lesson 2: Recap 28 key quotations from Stave 1.

The cards are colour coded to link to assessment objectives A01, A02 and A03 and the methods are underlined.
In each I try and ensure the analysis of the method leads directly on to a discussion of Shakespeare’s intentions and big ideas - informed by the Jacobean context.
I recommend giving students the blank version first to find out what they can already say about each quotation before sharing the cards so they can identify the gaps in their knowledge.
