This pack is made up of a set of activities. It can be used to introduce pupils to the idea that language has many subtleties and that statements are not always right or wrong. These activities will address the following areas of the national curriculum in Wales: Key stage 2 programme of study English, Oracy - 1, 2. This pack contains: three interactive whiteboard activities reference material and animations a class worksheet - differentiation by outcome.

The resource is split into two main sections: An animation shows how two words are joined together using an apostrophe to form a contraction, before the children test their knowledge with an interactive activity. This lesson introduces pupils to the techniques used in newspaper reporting. Pupils will get the opportunity to analyse a story and write their own report, using a photo library. They will be asked to insert their reports into a newspaper template.

This unit focuses on the opening of a suspense story. The children read the opening then identify the different forms of figurative speech that have been used to add effect. Personification, metaphors and similes are explained and examples shown. Children then go on to write the opening of their own suspense story using a picture of haunted house as stimulus.
