This is a game to review word part definitions. Ideal to follow Lessons 1-4 of the Word Part Series. There are three sets of words, and these sets can be played by themselves or put together for an extra challenge. Great way to introduce your students to base words, prefixes, and suffixes. Students are asked to help their mayor correct the signs on Main Street. They are given eleven different signs with errors, and they must use their knowledge of grammar to fix them. Types of mistakes include spelling, homonyms, verb usage, and apostrophes. Learners will be so absorbed in the quest they have been given, that they may even forget that they are doing grammar work. This grammar packets contains 30 exercises for students to complete using subordinating conjunctions. Fifteen of these conjunctions are used, and students are able to practice knowing when a comma is needed and when it is not by filling in the blanks. Each pair of sentences uses the selected subordinating conjunction twice, once with it at the beginning of the sentence, and again in the middle. When a sentence begins with the selected word, a comma is placed in the middle of the sentence indicating that there will need to be separation between the independent and dependent clauses. On the other hand, no comma is included when the word is placed in the middle of the sentence. This is a great activity to use on a unit on commas, on introductory clauses or on subordinating conjunctions only. Students try to make sets of pairs by matching a vocabulary word with its meaning. In order to do so, they have to reinforce their knowledge by requesting that match from another player. This lesson explains the process of breaking words into parts to identify meaning. It gives several examples, including breaking down the longest word in the English language to derive a definition. Next, it introduces eight common roots and goes through several activities to help students memorize these. First, it asks learners to break down a few familiar words for meaning. Next, students are asked to draw the meanings as a mnemonic device. Then, students are given a list of words that use these roots and asked to write a paragraph using as many of those words as possible. Finally, there is a short matching quiz followed by a review of the entire lesson. This packet is great for introducing a vocabulary unit.
