Schools Reopening: Sir Michael Wilshaw Suggests Teachers Should 'sacrifice Their Lives' - But It's Not A James Bond Movie, Says This Headteacher

A year, or even a day of school, can have more plot twists, obstacles, and action than your average James Bond film. Yes, he may have to save the world, but has he ever had to teach 30 8-year-olds maths on a sunny Wednesday afternoon?

And, just like 007, there are a few key characters that help you in your (educational) mission...

M

Every school (hopefully) has an M. A cool headteacher in a crisis, who isn’t afraid to call her troops out when they, only very occasionally, mess up. She may not be the most complementary of bosses, but you know when she gives you praise, she means it. And praise never felt so good.

Q

A spy is nothing without his gadgets. The mastermind behind the incredible inventions? Q. Or as we like to call him in school: the stationery delivery man. And while Bond’s go-to tools are usually a bit more er, sophisticated, the power of a full teachers’ toolkit should never be underestimated. Unchewed handwriting pens? A shiny new staple gun? And, oh my, is that a fresh batch of glue sticks?! Q (aka stationery man), you’ll always be our hero.

Trusty assistant

Even Bond can’t get by without a little help from his friends. At the beginning of his service, he didn’t exactly choose his assistants according to ability.  But thankfully, as time has moved on (and filmmakers have realised that, actually, girls do have brains), Bond has come to realise the importance of a having an equally-matched sidekick. Whoever you could not pass the day without, this is your trusty assistant and you will probably be theirs.

And the Dr No of your school?

Unnecessary workload. It’s not like you have enough on your plate trying to educate the heroes of the future (the key to being a super successful secret service agent? Excellent maths and literacy skills, obvs), without that no-gooder workload demanding all your time.  There’s only one solution. Kick its a**.

Bond, James Bond

So, who is the international man of mystery himself? Who deserves the title of the charming, brave and unstoppable world saviour? Who puts others before themselves, stopping at nothing to make the world a happier place? (And, enjoys the odd tipple along the way?). It’s you, of course. And your mission if you choose to accept it? Enjoy your summer.
