This unit introduces children to the conventions of a myth through the story of Dwynwen. They are then challenged to write their own Welsh myth by choosing character and problem cards as stimulus for their writing.

This resource pack allows pupils to find differences and similarities between well-known fairy stories. They look at six scenes and characters from six fairy tales and then put them into the correct storybook. Pupils make a chart that compares characters and incidents in fairy tales.
Pupils have the opportunity to make their own fairy tale, adding pictures and text from a large bank of images and props.
This activity pack introduces pupils to two traditional fairy tales, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Gingerbread Man. Pupils read through the stories with the teacher and then complete a series of activities that describe characters, sequence events and discuss what is needed for good beginnings, middles and endings when writing stories. A resource based around the issue of ‘hoodie culture’ prevalent in many towns throughout the country. These activities are developed primarily as a speaking and listening resource but there are many opportunities for reading and writing also. All of the activities are based on the models outlined in the new Welsh Assembly Document ‘Developing Thinking’ with lots of opportunity for group work and fit with the new skills framework. Teachers are advised to view the content of the lesson and lesson-plans prior to teaching in class.
The first in a series of units which focuses on developing writing skills. This particular unit focuses on creative and descriptive writing as well as giving informal advice. There are a variety of thinking skills tasks which encourage pupils to look at the skill of showing rather than telling and different levels of formality. Each unit also contains an avatar, along with opportunities to discuss and analyse writing.
Ideas and activities that help promote discussion about the poem ‘Ailgylchu’ which is a part of the AS Welsh Second Language specification. The resource contains animations, audio, video and is suitable for use on an interactive whiteboard or with a digital projector.
This lesson explores the use of verbs to add dramatic interest to poems. The activities will encourage pupils to think more carefully about the use of verbs to describe action and should enable them to develop their knowledge of verbs and stimulate them to write more descriptive poems. The whiteboard activities will encourage whole class/group discussion, collaboration and participation.
The lesson could be used at the beginning of a unit of work on writing poetry or as an extension lesson at the end of work on verbs.
This resource pack is designed to allow pupils to experiment with writing invitations. They will have to think of the appropriate layout and use images to make the invitation aesthetically pleasing. Pupils will be able to pick from a series of different events to design, make and print their invitations. There is a considerable amount of ICT as a key skill in this activity as they will be choosing the appropriate styles, images and editing their choices.
This unit revises the English GCSE novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. It includes interactive activities revising characterisation, important quotations, themes and key events, in preparation for the GCSE literature exam questions. Pupils will become familiar with American terminology to increase understanding of the novel and analyse the ending and its affect on the reader. The unit also includes teachers’ notes with suggestions on how to use each resource.
