This has been designed for Year 6 and includes 5 mini comprehensions with short extracts from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.
Each Comprehension fits on a single side of A4 paper and has 4/5 questions.
These ‘higher level’ comprehensions require the children to…
…use inference and deduction
…back up what they are saying using quotes
…answer ‘find the word’ or ‘find the group of words’ questions
…identify why the writer has written something in a particular way
There are absolutely no basic recall questions!
This is a 9 page homework project about the Mary Celeste - ideal for year 5 and 6 children. It could be completed in class or given as homework.
It includes four separate writing activities.

-a report / letter
Excerpt:
TASK 1 – A Letter to His Brother
As Benjamin Briggs, you decide to write a letter to your bother – Oliver. Like you he has also invested all of his money into a ship. His ship is called Julia A. Hallock. Both brothers had considered retiring as captains and thought about going into business together. In hindsight this was a mistake, but at the moment Benjamin Briggs is looking forward to the journey he is about to make - even if he is a little worried about the ‘curse’ on his ship.
Make sure that think about the following things:.
a. Think about how to set out an informal letter.
b. Explain why you are writing.
Each activity includes advice to help the children improve the quality of their writing.
This has 10 complete mini tests each with questions similar to those in the KS2 Grammar and Punctuation Test 1.
Each test fits on two sides of A4 and has 5 questions. The first test is based on the first 5 questions. The second is based on the next five and so on. This set provides alternative questions to all of the 50 in the 2017 test.
INCLUDES FREE SUBTRACTION PRACTICE SHEETS WITH ANSWERS. THESE THREE WORKSHEETS HAVE THE ANSWERS AT THE BOTTOM ON A SLIP WHICH CAN BE EASILY REMOVED. A BLANK SHEET IS ALSO INCLUDED SO THAT YOU OR THE CHILDREN CAN CREATE YOUR OWN HANDWRITTEN WORKSHEETS.
This is ideal for years 4 and 5, but could be used with 6.
This includes planning for six weeks - 30 days in total.
The format I have used is as follows…

Tuesday - Reading Comprehension
Wednesday - Grammar and Punctuation
Thursday and Friday - Longer Writing
Writing genres included…
-monologue
-play script / drama
-diary
-letter
-magazine article
-newspaper report
You can easily copy and paste the ideas from this planning into your own format if you want to.
This is an ideal book to use for a half term because it is not too long and it is engaging. However, please be aware that it includes a boy in a coma and it could upset some children if they have recently experienced an illness or loss in the family.
An emergency English and Maths lesson suitable for Years 3 to 6. Useful for teachers who don’t want a supply teacher to teach the lessons planned or for a teacher who suddenly has to cover another class.

The ideas here could be adapted for all KS2 year groups.

Each question has four calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Three have the same answer, but one is different. Can you find the odd one out?

INCLUDES FREE USEFUL PHRASES TO IMPROVE YOUR WRITING. THREE DIFFERENT SHEETS WITH PHRASES THAT WILL HELP THE CHILDREN TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THEIR WRITTEN WORK.
Make learning your times tables a bit more fun with Ultimate Times Tables Bingo.
-Includes 32 unique bingo cards - in black and white AND colour.
-Has the answers to tables up to 12 x 12.
-Each number (product) also shows the number of ways that it can be made with a smaller number next to it in brackets. This could be used to support work on probability.
-Children can choose their own number not already on their bingo card. The best option would be to choose either 12 or 24 (which ever of the two is not already on it) because both of these numbers have six ways of making them.
-These bingo cards are fair since every card has exactly the same chance of winning - until they choose their own number. This is because there are exactly 25 different ways of making the 11 numbers already on each bingo card. If they choose either 12 or 24 as their last number, there will be 31 ways altogether.
-Also includes 1 - 12 cards. Cut these out and use these to choose the times tables. Make sure that you replace the cards between choosing the first and second numbers or print two sets. This could easily be used in small groups in the classroom with minimal photocopying.
INCLUDES FREE BLANK CROSSWORD CREATOR. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO PLAN AND PRODUCE CROSSWORD ON ANY CHOSEN THEME. THIS CAN BE USEFUL FOR LEARNING SPELLINGS OR GENERAL REVISION.
This humorous letter for Upper KS2 is written from an anonymous person who claims to know you. The children are then given some advice about effort, attitude and behaviour in an attempt to help them have a fantastic year of learning. The whole letter is written as though you don’t know about it.
Extract
Hello,
Yes, that person standing right in front of you now is your new teacher. Huh, can you believe it? Now sit up straight and try to create a good impression (yes I know it’s difficult) and whatever you do – don’t stare. I know it’s tempting, but just don’t do it. Oh… and remember to smile – but not too much ‘cause that’s just scary! It makes you look like you’ve done something that you shouldn’t have.
I would put these letters in envelopes and give them to the children when they first enter the class.
The children could write a reply to the letter - either straight away or at the end of the academic year.
ALSO INCLUDES FREE READING PROJECT. THIS 8 PAGE PROJECT ENCOURAGES THE CHILDREN TO FIND A GOOD BOOK IN A FUNNY AND ENGAGING WAY. THE CHILDREN HAVE TO SPEAK TO ADULTS ABOUT THE BOOKS THEY READ WHEN THEY WERE YOUNGER AND PREPARE A SPEECH/PRESENTATION ABOUT THE BOOK THEY FOUND. ADVICE IS GIVEN ALONG THE WAY. THIS PROJECT WOULD BE PERFECT TO GIVE TO YOUR NEW CLASS OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAY.
These sheets have the answers underneath which can be removed or folded back.
All the questions require you to take from the next column at least once.
Four sheets are included that are ready to use.
A blank sheet with boxes for the teacher or pupil to create their own handwritten sheet is also included.
INCLUDES FREE THE SECRET GARDEN MINI COMPREHENSION POWERPOINT. THIS INCLUDES FIVE EXTRACTS EACH WITH 5 QUESTIONS. IT IS IDEAL FOR YEAR 4 AND 5, BUT COULD BE USED WITH ANY KS2 CLASSES.
Use addition, subtraction, multiplication or division and the 4 numbers to get the target number - but one of the numbers is missing! You need to find the missing single digit number AND the solution.
This PowerPoint has 25 different problems, but it would be very easy to add more should you need to.
This was created using PowerPoint 2013.
